Where possible, on a weekly basis we will post a wrap of the games that took place for the Yarras over the previous weekend, starting today as below:
A Grade: Day one of two versus Youlden Parkville
The Yarras were sent into bat in a reduced overs two day match which saw us bat out 46 overs (with 22 overs still to be bat) with the score at 4/133. Hamza and Kingy opened up and put on a quick scoring 16 runs before Kingy was bowled. Pal entered the crease and continued the positive cricket as the pair put on 39 runs before Pal was run out. Vippy was next in and got straight to work putting on 28 before being bowled, and shortly after Hamza was dismissed in the deep for 48 runs. Ryan and Woodsy went straight to work to stabilise the innings and saw out the remaining 12 overs of the day. We are looking forward to getting stuck into next week and putting up a first victory for the season.
A Resrve: T20 versus Youlden Parkville
A hastily rearranged side won the toss and elected to bat on a slow, low Como East wicket, with Gunny and Kirk getting us off to a good start. However, thanks to good fielding and disciplined bowling we were not given a lot of loose balls to work with and were never able to get on top, losing wickets at regular intervals and not being able to build any partnerships. With only 83 to defend, the Yarras sought to replicate the tight line and length shown by the opposition and there were strong bowling efforts from each of Ravi, BG and Geet. Unfortunately, despite a couple of late wickets threatening to derail Youlden, it was not to be and they knocked off the runs with two overs to spare. Whilst not the result we were looking for, there was plenty of heart and commitment on show which will hopefully be built on over the coming weeks.
C Saturday: One dayer versus Melbourne City
After losing the toss and being put into the field, Ashwin and James started strongly backed up by Raj and Asha - the attack was frugal with a wicket to the first 3 and a run out we had them 4/24. Sud came on and got his first wicket for the club with a sharp catch by Kenan behind the stumps for his first catch for the Yarras. With a flurry of wickets including 3 to Raj and 1 to Jay we had them on the ropes at 9/110. When Kenan took a sharp stumping it looked like we had knocked them over cheaply, before the square leg umpired got caught looking in the sky. They then went on to make a 50 run last wicket stand to post 160.
With the captain falling early, Kenan (23) and Bas (22) put on 35 for the second wicket before Kenan was run out and Bas bowled shortly after. We then lost wickets at regular intervals before James and Ashwin put on an entertaining 36 partnership to be bowled out for 115.
It was a day that could have been as we were in a great spot with the ball before it got away from us. I was still pleased with the effort of the guys and the energy in the field. Congratulations to Ashwin and Sud with their first wickets for the club and Kenan with a great catch and a couple of joint run outs.
D Sunday: One dayer versus Canterbury
A great start with the bat (and a ton) followed by tight bowling led to a first-up win for D Sunday.
Continuing his great form from last year, CC won the toss and chose to bat. Dave Polmear and John Lloyd got us off to a great start with (surprisingly) Dave outscoring John for the first few overs. The pitch was playing low and slow but with no menace. The openers got us to 60 off the first 14 overs before John was given out LBW for 28. The wickets then came along more regularly with Dave
batting brilliantly at one end. He batted through the innings to finish on 106 n.o. A great innings and Dave's first ton!
Defending 202 was always going to rely on tight bowling and good fielding. We knew that anything wide was going to be punished. And so it unfolded. Going into the match with 7 bowlers, I learnt that 2 were injured so we were down to 5. Luckily they all bowled well, although without a lot of luck. Mostly tight bowling with great efforts in the field meant that we were able to restrict them to 5/174. This included one of their openers also scoring a ton!
In summary, a great start to the season that has us in the four already.
